A Custom Yoke For You

Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. -Matthew 11:28-29

A yoke us used to lighten the load and help the animals carry more weight without getting tired. I find it interesting that yokes are often used in pairs of animals so that they can work together more efficiently to carry a load and get the job done without over tiring. We all know the importance of having a close friend who is willing to carry our load and step in with us even when the job gets hard, or even better knowing God is with us helping us. It is even more interesting to learn that an unevenly yoked pair of animals would be a nightmare for the farm. The two’s inability to work together would produce a very long day for the farmer. They could be useless getting anywhere if they aren’t working together. (But that’s for another day and blog.)

Just like a farmer custom fits a yoke to his animals, God custom fits a yoke for each one of us. I don’t want to think about the many yokes that are left unused because we choose to carry the weight all by ourselves. God has the perfect help that we need to get through our trials, and even just a day at work, or home with the littles. It is time that we stop carrying loads that we weren’t meant to carry alone. It is time to hook up that yoke made especially for us to join with God and carry the weight together. Just imagine yourself with God. You are both strapped in carrying the heaviness of the day, together. You are close enough to discuss things, and hold hands. Connected with God, carrying the load together, you feel the lightness and begin to relax. We all need this! We all crave this! Go take up the yoke that was made just for you!
