The Countdown
A person’s days are determined; you have decreed the number of months and have set limits he cannot exceed. Job 14:5 NIV
Muhammad Ali is quoted as saying, “Don’t count the days. Make the days count.” And these wise words have been on my heart and mind a lot lately reminding me of seasons; beginnings and endings.
Working in a school, I am guaranteed today to hear the words, “11 days to go!” as a season of school draws to a close leaving students and adults in anticipation of summer. I’m certain I will hear the words, “Spring is finally here!” as the morning sun peeks through the clouds for the first time in what feels like months and the warmth of the day matches the expected temperatures of spring. Yes, the change of seasons can be a time of joy!
I’m glad life comes in seasons. There are times when life is hard and we just need to be relieved of a situation or task. There are times when lovely seasons must come to an end bringing difficult times that grow and mature us. Much as the yearly seasons change, life is a perpetual change in seasons.
But today I ask you to take pause and consider that though the countdown may be on as you prepare to enter or exit a new season, the days of your life are numbered. Yes, the countdown is on for the time you have to spend on this earth. How will you spend those days? Who will you influence? Where will you spend your time and resources bringing hope and life into the world?
Though the countdown is on consider how you will make the days count!
