Blessed Assurance

This includes you who were once far away from God.  You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions.  Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body.  As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault.     -Colossians 1:21-22

Yes our sins distance us from God until we accept his forgiveness.  Thanks to Jesus we are reconciled with God and made blameless, and holy and without fault.  Because Jesus died for us we can be seen perfect in the the eyes of God!  It’s such an amazing truth to carry with us.  Why then do we have so much shame and guilt heaped over our shoulders as we walk the path of life?  Paul knew this would be an issue and, in fact, addressed it in the very next sentence.  But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it.  Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News…..(taken from Colossians 1:23).  Paul knew how hard it would be for us to hold onto God’s grace with every sin we participated in.  He knew that with each “mess up” we had there was a good chance we would doubt ourselves and the truths we know about God’s grace.  Through Colossians 1:23 Paul was warning us to carry God’s grace everywhere.  We are encouraged to have it written on our hearts, we are told to stand firmly on God’s promise of forgiveness and being made clean through Jesus’ death and resurrection.  Doubting who we are in Christ will lead to a broken faith which can eventually lead to no faith.  It’s why we must stay away from sin and evil because if we participate in it there is a good chance we can be sucked in.  When we give up on believing we are forgiven and that God’s grace washes us clean then we give up on our faith.  Without hope we stay dirty.  Our hope allows us to be cleaned by Jesus’ blood.  So keep on believing in God’s grace for your every “mess up”. Don’t stop believing that you are the made whole and pure through Jesus Christ.  Every time you sin, every time you make a stupid mistake, every time you choose wrong over right……..believing you are forgiven is faith.  Let your faith save you!  Nothing but your faith can save you!  Don’t drift away from this blessed assurance!
