Torn Down and Rebuilt... Stronger and Better
A few days ago I posed this question to my husband, “What good do you think God is working through this entire situation?” We shared a few thoughts and then continued on with our day. Later in the afternoon, the same conversation arose with my mom. Again, we chatted about the possibilities.
This question lingers in my mind days later. Romans 8:28 tells us, “And in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose,” which leaves me wondering what God is up to these days.
You may ask, if God is really working for our good, then why doesn’t it feel good? Sickness, quarantine, shutdown, job loss, educational challenges are just the tip of the iceberg when we look at what’s happening both to us and around us. I think we would all say that none of these things are good in and of themselves, but as I reflect on scripture, I am reminded of many times when it looked like things were falling apart. But these dark times were just precursors to a bright and amazing new dawn.
Joseph spent time in prison before rising up to save a nation. Adultery, murder, and death caused David’s world to fall apart just before he rose to mighty rule on the throne. Moses too murdered a man before God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. Peter experienced his greatest failure in denying Christ right before Jesus appointed him to go and begin perhaps the greatest ministry in scripture. Most extraordinarily, Jesus was crucified, dead, and buried for 3 days before he rose from the grave to claim victory over sin and death. Hallelujah that Christ allowed God to destroy the temple and rebuild it 3 days later… stronger and better!
I guess what I’m saying is that sometimes good things fall apart so that greater things can come together. I know that If God says he is working for our good, then He is 100% working for our good, even when it doesn’t feel good. No, especially when it doesn’t feel good you can rest assured that God is working for your good. If it feels like you’re personal world is crumbling then start watching for the good that will be rebuilt after the demolition is complete.
A new house is not built on a weak foundation. New structures are built on cleared ground. Marriages don’t find healing on old habits and beliefs. New habits cannot be formed until old habits are let go of. Truths can’t have reign in our minds unless the lies are completely dispelled. We often undergo times of tearing down so that God can build us afresh on his truths. Deaths on this earth do not mean the end, but rather the destruction of a temporal body in exchange for an eternal body built on the church of Christ.
My question for you today is this, “What is God tearing down so that he can rebuild? Your calendar? Your priorities? Your Time? Your control or our finances? Your desires? Whatever you feel you’re losing control of may just be the thing that God wants to destroy so that he can reclaim his rightful position as Lord of your life, loving him with our entire heart, soul, mind, strength, and nothing less. If you’re feeling pressure in an area, give in and allow God to fully destroy that little god so that the One True God can be your new foundation. Stronger and Better!
